Influenza Injections

These are available from September onwards. Appointments can normally be made from the beginning of September.

Family Planning Clinic

There are family planning clinics every week. Please telephone for details.

Antenatal Services

Patients are seen by a midwife at the clinics by appointment. A GP will also be available.

Midwives and health visitors will also visit patients at home.

Well Baby Clinics

Clinics are held weekly and offer the opportunity for you to bring your baby for weight/growth checks and discuss parenting issues with the health visitors. Appointments are made through your health visitor.

This clinic is for well babies only - if your child is unwell they need an appointment with their GP.

Child Health Surveillance Clinic

This involves regular assessment of children up to five years old by the health visitors and doctors.

Well Woman Clinics

These clinics are run on most days by the practice nurses for smears and discussion of women's health issues.

Asthma Clinic

This is run by a practice nurse in conjunction with Dr Watson, by appointment only.

Diabetic Clinic

This is run by a advanced practice practitioner in conjunction with Dr Soman, by appointment only.

COPD Clinic

A specialist clinic run by a nurse to help patients with Chronic Obstruction Pulmonary Disease. Appointments can be made at reception.

Minor Surgery

We have two GPs who carry out minor surgical procedures at Friarwood Surgery by appointment and the doctors will be happy to advise you on this.

Travel Immunisation/Vaccinations

Please look under Further Information on the right of the website and open the 14. Travel Questionnaire link, where you can either print a form off to complete and hand back into the surgery or alternatively (if you have an online account) complete and submit back to us online. Please note that we would require the completed form at least eight weeks in advance of your holiday to ensure adequate cover.

A charge will be made for certain immunisations and vaccinations which are not covered by the NHS. A list of these charges is held at reception.

Test Results

Since our telephones are very busy in the early morning, we ask you to telephone (01977 704777) for test results (eg blood, urine, x-ray) after 10.30am each day.

Note that the practice has a strict policy regarding confidentiality and data protection and we will only release test results to the person to whom they relate unless that person has given prior permission (or under the age of 16 years old) for the release of this data or they are not capable of understanding the results.

When you take your test you will be told how long it will be before the results are returned to the practice.

It is your responsibility to ring for your results within 7 working days and to make an appointment to discuss them with your doctor if your are advised to do so.

Non NHS Examinations

Certain types of medical certificates are not provided free under the National Health Service.

Your doctor will charge a fee for 'insurance' medicals and examinations for fitness to drive (HGV, PSV) and for certificates required by employers e.g. police, local authorities.

We are only able to provide the above service to patients registered with Friarwood Surgery.

Please ask reception staff if you would like information on which services are chargeable and the fee for each.

Out of Hours Services

GPs

If you have an urgent medical problem when Friarwood Surgery is closed and you can't wait until the next working day to see your doctor, you should call your normal surgery number and an answer-phone message will tell you how to contact the out of hours GP service.

The out of hours GP service is available whenever your GP practice or health centre is closed.

Dentists

If you need urgent dental care and are a regular patient of a dental practice please contact your dental surgery and an answer-phone message will give you details of where and when emergency treatment is available.

If you are not a regular patient of a dental practice, telephone:

• The 111 service - telephone lines open 24 hours, 7 days a week

Please note that emergency dental treatment can only be provided for trauma and emergencies. All requests will be assessed over the telephone before an appointment can be arranged.

Other health services

There are lots of health services available across the district when you are feeling unwell and it is important to contact or visit the right place, at the right time to make sure you get the treatment you need. These are other services that may be able to help you out of normal working hours:

• Pharmacy services - your pharmacist (or chemist) is qualified to give health advice and suggest remedies without an appointment for a whole range of illnesses. For example, if you suffer from minor aliments such as coughs, cold, headaches, indigestion, sickness and diarrhoea or heartburn, the pharmacy should be the first place you visit. There will always be a pharmacy open over weekends and Bank Holidays. Your local newspaper or NHS Direct (Tel: 111) will have details. Many common illnesses and minor ailments can be easily treated at home with a well-stocked medicine cabinet.

• NHS Direct - this confidential helpline is available 24 hours a day if you are feeling ill and are unsure what to do. Qualified nurses can give you advice and point you to the most appropriate service for your needs. Just call 111

• What is NHS 111?

  NHS 111 is a new free telephone service being introduced nationally to make it easier for people to access local health and social care services when they have an urgent need. In Yorkshire and the Humber, this service will be provided by Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) NHS Trust. It has replaced the NHS Direct telephone service (0845 46 47), and will provide a general number for people to call when their need is urgent but not considered life-threatening (999). For further information please click on the 'Opening Hours' tab at the top of the page.

• NHS walk-in centre - for the treatment of minor illnesses or injuries, such as sprains, insect bites, burns, colds and infections. This is located at King Street Health Centre, Wakefield, and is open Monday to Sunday 8.00am - 8.00pm. No appointment is necessary; you just need to walk in and an experienced nurse will see you as soon as possible.

• 999 ambulance service - emergency ambulances are for people who are seriously ill or injured and need time-critical help. An emergency is a critical or life-threatening condition that may include loss of consciousness, severe chest pain, breathing difficulties or heavy loss of blood. Calling 999 for an ambulance does not mean that you will be seen quicker when you arrive at A&E. All patients are seen on the basis of medical need.

• Social care services - if you think that you or someone you know needs social care services in the Wakefield district, you can ring Social Care Direct on 0845 8503 503, 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

Please remember:

You should only visit Accident and Emergency (A&E) in the case of real emergencies. Going straight to A&E can put the emergency services and hospitals under added pressure, and unnecessary use of the service could prevent someone whose condition is more serious from getting immediate treatment.

Echo Community Programme

Echo Community Programme with support from Dr Watson and Partners at Friarwood Surgery, are proud to be able to offer specifically for the elderly, those isolating/shielding or with a disability, a new Winter Covid-19 Home Visit Support Provision. Starting on Tuesday 1st of December '20 from 9-30 to 1pm, and weekly thereafter.

ECHO Community Programme (Every Child Has Options)

Test kit analysis

We have recently been advised by the National Bowel Screening Programme that you failed to return the test kit for analysis.

The Practice firmly believes that this simple test is a valuable aid in detecting any potential signs of bowel cancer cells and would encourage you to reconsider your decision.

• A persistent change in bowel habit, especially going to the toilet more often or diarrhoea for several weeks.
• Bleeding from the back passage without any obvious reason.
• Abdominal pain, especially if it is severe.
• A lump in your abdomen.

Please remember that these symptoms do not necessarily mean that you have bowel cancer, but if you have one or more of these symptoms for four to six weeks, you should see your GP.

Should you no longer have the test kit and now wish to take part you can call the Screening Freephone number 0800 707 6060 and ask for another.

If, after careful consideration you decide not to take part, please let us know by calling 01977 704777.  Please note that you will be offered screening every 2 years.

Your decision will have no impact on any future medical services provided by the Practice.
